Failing to Plan is Planning to Fail

Any good plan should have three elements

  • What is your goal?
  • How will you reach your goal?
  • When will you reach the goal?

Let me describe three instances in my life where we did not adhere to these principles and faced the consequences.

About years ago, my elder brother and I went for a movie in Kolkata – the movie theater was very close to our house. We reached before time and went to the ticket counter – ‘2 tickets for Umrao Jaan please’, said my brother. The man at the counter saw us and said, Umrao Jaan won’t be walking here from this week. We are very upset and disappointed. The theater next door took us 20 minutes by bus. When we entered the theater, we missed all the previews and 15 minutes of the movie. My brother and I kept blaming each other: You should have checked in the newspaper!

Moral of the story: You should know where are you going What is your goal? What do you want to achieve? Otherwise, you will reach the wrong destination.

In the last week of October in 98, I went to Yosemite with some friends. One of the friends helped us to plan the trip. He booked cabins, rented a fancy car, planned things to do in Yosemite. We arrived in the evening after a scenic drive. We are very excited! We got to know the problem at night. Autumn is the best time to visit Yosemite. Unless you book unheated cabins in the woods and the night temperatures go below freezing, we are newbies to India. We went to bed in wool socks, thermals, jeans, jackets, all the comforters and blankets available – and still woke up shivering.

Lesson no. 2: how How you get to your destination is important – not only the tools/techniques you use (car in our example) but also how to understand the small details, logistics, external conditions, etc.

When I returned home, we went to Goa-India’s Hawaii- my parents, two brothers, their families and me – 10 of us. The journey from Bombay to Goa is very scenic – surrounded by green fields, coconut trees, hills and villages and towns along the river. Goa has a wonderful mix of sun, surf and beaches

As with all good things, our trip had to end and we started for the station. A few minutes later, my elder brother suddenly announced – oh no, our train was at 5:30 (instead of 6:30 – which we were aiming for). My father started – why didn’t you check it first? I always tell you all to check and verify these things – but you never listen! We miss the train and are stuck now! My younger brother told the driver – please drive fast and take a shortcut if possible, we are getting late. My 5-year-old nephew was like, ‘Mommy, what’s going to happen now? Shall we go back to the hotel?’

It’s 5:10 and we don’t know how long it will take? Everyone’s heart rates went up – stopping at a red light seemed to take forever. The driver used the traditional Indian technique – honking continuously to announce his urgency and all vehicles to give way! In India, it is an informal voice sign used by everyone.

Finally, we reached the station – Time: 5:26 PM. We rushed towards the platform—two porters and 10 of us. My two nieces and nephew were so excited – it was the highlight of the trip for them.

As we started loading the luggage, the train started to leave. ‘Everybody run, parents come first’ – there was an uproar. As the train picked up speed, all of us and our luggage piled into the train. We breathed. It only lasted a minute. We boarded last but one compartment and one compartment with our seats was up.

Our dramatic journey continued…carrying luggage and people through the compartments. We ignored people staring, making faces and making comments at us and continued marching. Until we stop going further! We arrived at the first class compartment and were not allowed through the passage. My brothers tried to talk to the train conductor for an exception, but he refused. We stood/sat on our bags till the first station where our train stopped and then transferred.

Our relaxation and happiness of last four days disappeared in two hours of tension. And, we wanted to go back – to the noise and the pollution and the traffic – to our home sweet home.

The third point in the plan is: when

In conclusion, whether your goal is to reach a personal fitness resolution, whether it’s a house painting project or a cross-functional IT project, every plan should have a specific goal, a defined methodology and a time-line.

As the famous saying goes, He who fails to plan, plans to fail
