Grow Your Downline – How Your Upline May Be Sabotaging You
Did you enter into a network marketing business believing that it was a business that would virtually build itself and that you would be able to grow your downline almost like magic? Were you led to believe that if you let your upline “help you out,” that you would grow your downline in no time?
The truth is that a lot of the “help” that people get from their uplines is actually sabotaging their success. Before you go thinking that I am saying that these people are purposely trying to sabotage you, I’m not. Of course, it is good for your upline if you succeed and grow your downline big time.
The truth is, though, that much of what people are learning and allowing their uplines to do to “help” them is really hurting them (and is not helping you grow your downline). Here are the top three ways your upline may be sabotaging you (and the kind of “help” from your upline you want to AVOID at all costs):
1. Teaching Bad Marketing Strategies: One of the biggest and most pervasive things that uplines (and companies) teach to people is the idea that your sole lead pool should be your friends, family, neighbors and co-workers. Approaching these folks as your only leads, though, is a poor marketing strategy for several reasons.
One, they comprise a very small number of leads (relatively speaking). Even if you know “tons of people,” you need to have an ongoing stream of new leads coming to you every day to be able to grow your downline massively. Second, the odds of this group remaining in your downline and consuming the products (or wanting to build the business) over the long-term are very small. Meaning, that your retention rates from this kind of lead are pretty low. Third, these leads are not the best kind, i.e., their motivation for joining your business is much less likely to be that they were looking for the benefits your product offers, and is more likely to be that they want to help you out. This is not the foundation on which you can grown your downline.
2. Promoting The Company Instead Of You: The second major way your upline may be sabotaging you is by telling you (and teaching you) that the way to grow your downline is by promoting the company and the business opportunity. Leading with the company or the opportunity is always a mistake. The way to generate a lot of good, targeted leads is by positioning yourself as an expert who has a solution to a particular problem. The type of leads you want to generate are people who are looking for the benefits that your product provides, and who will be interested in consuming the product you are marketing themselves. It those people who will not only join your business (and, by extension, grow your downline), but will be loyal to you and your product.
3. Positioning Themselves As Leader & Expert: How many of you have had your upline suggest that when you have new possible prospects, that you refer them to a 3-way call which will be hosted by them (not you). Or, has your upline offered to host any of the house or hotel parties you have put together? Allowing your upline to do this will most certainly sabotage you and your ability to grow your downline. The best way to generate leads and get those leads into your business is to position YOURSELF as a leading expert in your niche, and then develop a relationship and trust with your prospects. People will always buy from people, not from companies. Also, people will always buy from people they believe they can trust. By letting your upline take the lead on 3-way calls and parties, you are telling your prospects that your upline, not you, are the experts.
