The Father of Oleander Soup – Part 2 of the Oleander Series

In a previous article, “An Amazing Discovery in Turkey,” the first in this series of articles about oleander, I described how Dr. H.Z. Ozel discovered an ancient remedy for cancer and other conditions in rural Turkey in the early 1960s, and after successfully treating thousands of patients over the past 40 years, Dr. Ozel patented the drug. After contacting one of her old friends, she was told about a clinic in Honduras where she could discuss a new cancer drug being developed in San Antonio. Betty saw an oncologist in San Antonio who advised her of the risks of chemotherapy and radiation therapy, and that at her advanced stage, her chances of prolonging life were slim and the chance of a serious side was high. However, a clinic in Honduras is reporting many successful cures of several types of cancer, including juvenile brain cancer.

Ed was determined to find out what was in the drug and went to the US Patent Office website and searched using the word Unvirzel. After several searches, Ed found the patent. It’s about 39 pages of legalese, written in the language of patent attorneys who charge $400 an hour to write patents that only lawyers and scientists dare read.

After several weeks of part-time study, the patent began to make sense. It is too confusing, overly detailed and exaggerated to make a soup from the leaves and stems of a common plant, the oleander. No problem. Ed has huge oleander plants in his yard that are very healthy ornamentals with beautiful flowers year round. Making soup is as easy as getting a soup pot, some clippers, an electric hot plate and a place to cook. Ed’s wife, Carol, won’t let him cook in her kitchen, so Ed is resigned to his outdoor store room, a 10×18-foot building that stores yard tools and seasonal sports equipment. After burning several pots of soup because the heat was too high, Ed turned the heat down and simmered the water and oleander clippings for four hours. Then he removed the leaves and stems and strained the remaining broth using paper towels and plastic strainers. Dr. in Patent. The new soup was fresh, not freeze-dried and reconstituted, and according to Betty, tasted fresh. Ed went first and tried something about a teaspoon. Betty then took a teaspoonful and tried it. She declared that she liked the latest version better, and that was it. She took oral doses three times a day with meals, the only side effect being diarrhea, which subsided after a week.

Three weeks later her tests were amazing, showing that the tumors were still shrinking and almost gone. A month later, she had no tumors. Betty stopped eating soup after another month, after her doctor declared her cancer-free.

Sadly, after about eight months, feeling healthy and energetic, Betty fell into her bed for a nap and felt her collar bone snap. Tests showed cancer in the bone and it was aggressive. Her oncologist referred her to another doctor, who recommended some strong new chemotherapy and discouraged her from taking the oleander extract again. In two months the chemo reduced the bone cancer, but also destroyed her kidneys. She died of kidney failure a month later, never taking another drop of the oleander soup or Unvirgel that had previously saved her life. But she trusted her oncologist, who was very nice and very persuasive. Thankfully, Betty lived to be 88 years old. Ever since Ed’s father gave her cigarettes when she was 18, she has been a two-pack-a-day heavy smoker. He died at age 61 of coronary disease, directly related to his heavy smoking.

Katrina deals with hepatitis-C, a serious liver condition that often leads to liver cancer. She started making her own oleander soup and hoped it would stop her condition. It did. Less than two months later, her hepatitis-C was gone. Her liver enzymes are normal. Didn’t come back for two years. She shared the recipe with doctors in Mexico treating poor patients with AIDS, cancer, hepatitis-C and psoriasis. A friend of hers reported that her rheumatoid arthritis symptoms went away using a homemade remedy. She laughs as she describes the scene in the kitchen, with a large pot of steaming leaves, and two Mexican brothers, medical doctors, standing there taking notes on how to cook difficult things like “boracho beans” or chicken mole. Later in 2003, Ed was surfing the Internet, looking for sites referring to “Unvirzel”. He found the Minnesota Wellness Directory site and read their comments about how good the prospects were for this new extract made from poisonous oleander leaves. Ed emailed the host the recipe and a brief summary of his research. The host, David Bonello, researched the concept and soup recipe in addition to getting feedback from his herbalists and medical friends, who published the recipe on his site in his June 2003 newsletter with warnings about its use.
