Step 1: Write your feature list
Start your thinking by taking some notes. Before doing anything, write down what comes to your mind. Writing a feature list on a piece of paper will help you focus and expand on your idea. I recommend writing your idea several times and in several ways. This list is also helpful when you are discussing with your co-founders, designers, investors or developers; They are all going to ask for it. Remember to get them to sign an NDA before you share your feature list. Your feature list should be clean and easy to understand. Also make sure it has popular and unique features, which will play a major role in your product’s success.
Step 2: Do market research
After writing your list of strong attributes, you’ll want to conduct market research to discover the competition, trends, and market needs. Make sure there are no similar apps in the market. If so, find out their reviews, ratings, feedback and what not. Add features that make your app unique and more appealing to the audience. After doing market research, you need to update your feature list.
Step 3: Identify the users/audience
It is important to know who will use your app and who is the audience for your product. Your customers may be from a specific industry, gender, region, age group, existing customers, income group, specific profession or any other group. Once you’ve identified certain demographics of your audience, you can find out what people in these demographics like or dislike. Knowing your audience can help you re-engineer your app and its features. Your entire project moves around user engagement. You can also conduct focus group studies to find out what your audience likes or dislikes. Your audience determines the success of your product and this insight from a focus study goes a long way in defining product success.
Step 4: Figure out a monetization strategy
Earning money is a great reward and energizer for your thinking. You can monetize your app idea in several ways: subscription fee, in-app purchase, in-app advertising, user data, sponsorship. You want to know what works for your app, audience and market. Launching a paid app doesn’t work these days, but you can make the app free with an in-app purchase option for more functions. Even in-app ads are losing their luster these days because of the user experience. Having user data is becoming a big monetization technique because you can use it to make money indirectly. You can find sponsorship for the app; This works for a socially targeted app. It is important that you choose 1 or 2 techniques that will give you a good return on investment.
Step 5: Create a rough sketch/wire frame
Maybe you haven’t done it before or don’t know how to do it. However, a rough sketch or wire frame can help you define the concept and refine the requirements of your product. You can draw a rough sketch using paper and pencil, create a wire frame using online tools. As you start to sketch/wire frame, you can further refine your app idea and list of features. Also, it helps you determine the proper navigation of the application. You don’t need technical skills for this step, but you should have a general-understanding of how navigation works. Your wireframes, along with your feature list, create a very good set of specifications for building your mobile app.
Step 6: Contact local mobile app developers and get estimates
Once you have your first version of the feature list and wireframe, you’ll want to start identifying vendors who can build your mobile app at a high-quality, low-cost. You need to look for local vendors and some global vendors and contact them. Once you shortlist 5 to 6 good vendors, get them to sign an NDA and send the project details. A good seller should check your details and ask you lots of questions. Make sure you answer them in detail so that your thinking is fully conveyed. A good vendor should also be able to give you some suggestions to improve your idea. You should get proposals from multiple vendors along with the time and cost for development and compare them. You should check vendors on past performance, process, price, time, testimonial and their eagerness to work for you. Finally, you can choose a vendor and start working with them.
Step 7: Complete the UI/UX
Once you choose a company, you need to work with them to create the UI/UX of the app. You should first create a detailed wireframe of the application so that you can visualize each screen, function and flow of the application. After the review, you can decide to add or remove features. Once the wireframe is complete, you’ll want them to create the visual design of the application. It should give color, theme, fonts and visual appeal to your idea. This step provides an almost final picture of what your mobile app will look like and how it will flow. After doing this, re-evaluate your vendor development plan, time and cost. If the first estimate of time/cost is increased, get more funding or cut some features. You want to pay your mobile app developer the right value.
Step 8: Develop and test the app
Let your app developer start building the app for you. They can send you an app (in progress) every week and you can test them and give them feedback. If you come up with new feature sets during development, discuss them with your app developer and get a time and cost estimate. If it fits your budget, go ahead and do it. If not, wait for the next step.
Step 9: Launch the app and market it
Once you are satisfied with the app, launch it on iTunes App Store and Google Play Store. You should also start marketing the app. Get some advice from experts on app marketing. You can also do self marketing. Start on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, it’s an easy way to spread the word about the app. You should also contact reporters and bloggers who are interested in your app and write about it. A press release on free sites or a paid site is very useful. If you have more in your budget, you can hire a PR or app marketing company.
Step 10: Gather market response and prepare for next step
After the first launch and marketing, you can collect user data, market response and demand. If you get a good response, you can plan the next step for the app. Repeat steps 1 to 9 for the next step. This time, you can do them much faster and more efficiently. If the app isn’t getting a good response in the market, find out what’s hindering growth and create an action plan.
